PASSION PIT: THE REELING

Posted by English | Posted on 31-12-2009

One of my favorite videos of 2009 was The Massachusetts electro-pop 5-piece Passion Pit’s video for The Reeling, the first single from their full length debut album, Manners. Amazing visuals to a great song. Thanks to this song’s video, I now feel like I have an art-school collegiate education.

Why Star Trek Is Among The Best Movies of 2009 by Tony English

Posted by English | Posted on 31-12-2009

star-trek-2009-movie-posterIm not the least bit embarrassed to say that i grew a huge fan of the Star Trek franchise. There was always something intriguing to me about exploring distant worlds in space and discovering untold wonders around the universe. I have to admit that when i first discovered that Paramount was going with the full tent pole treatment for Trek and they were assigning it to their new A Team of JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof, Bryan Burk, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman i was a bit apprehensive. The franchise in recent years was truly starting to decline. And In my experience remakes are usually disappointing and redoing such a historic franchise as Star Trek would difficult to say the least. it was a bold and risky move for Paramount but i hoped that the change in tean would give Star Trek a much needed boost, while still keeping true to the spirit of the 40+ year saga that i enjoyed so much as a kid. And after watching the movie (* in Imax) that exactly what the’ve done. Star Trek was Amazing!!

The first 12 minutes alone is worth the price of admission. Paramount under the direction of JJ Abrams has assembled a fine cast who seem to be aware of their predecessors but never resort to impressions. Both Quinto and Pine do a fine job with their portrayals of Kirk and Spock, and Karl Urban couldn’t be better as Leonard McCoy. The supporting players–Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov)–all capture the essence of what drove their characters, though their screen time is limited. STAR TREK manages the nearly impossible: it pleases hardcore fans with plenty of in-jokes and references (and an appearance by the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy), but it doesn’t alienate newcomers with tons of technobabble. The action and effects rank with any other top-tier summer blockbuster, but there’s plenty of humor to balance the excitement. Star Trek reignites a classic franchise with action, humor, a strong story, and brilliant visuals, and will please traditional Trekkies and new fans alike. Definitley one of the best films of 2009. If you missed it in theatre its a must have for your dvd or torent collection!!

SADE: SOLDIER OF LOVE

Posted by English | Posted on 31-12-2009

Searching for love in our lives sometimes feels like fighting a war. And sometimes in that war we loose a few battles. Over the militant pace of the drums found on her latest single, Soldier of Love, Sade finds a way to poetically express this analogy. Read the lyrics below as you listen to this song then leave me a comment telling what you think of the song.

“I’ve lost the use of my heart But I’m still alive
Still looking for the life The endless pool on the other side
It’s a wild wild west I’m doing my best
I’m at the borderline of my faith, I’m at the hinterland of my devotion
In the frontline of this battle of mine
But I’m still alive
I’m a soldier of love. Every day and night
I’m soldier of love All the days of my life…”

Nostalgia: MacGyver

Posted by English | Posted on 28-12-2009

As a kid growing up in the 80’s action TV shows dominated the TV screen. Once a week, programs like Airwolf, Knight Rider and the A-team featured lead characters that used brut strength to beat up bad guys with diabolical schemes to cause harm to others or take over the world. Not that i have any problem with that. In fact you’ll probably find future post from me dedicated to a bunch of those shows. But one show from childhood was unlike the rest, MacGyver. Unlike stereotypical “macho” action heroes, MacGyver used his brain in stead of his braun to beat the villain. MacGyver or Mac was a highly intelligent, optimistic action hero played by Richard Dean Anderson. He preferred non-violent conflict resolution wherever possible and refuses to carry or use a gun. Usually the only thing he ever carried on him was his trusty swiss army knife and some duct tape. Week after week me and my friends tuned into watch MacGyver excape from impossible situations using nothing but his knowledge of sciecnce and the everyday items found in his immediate surroundings. I wish this show was out now!!
